Amphibiking in Sabino Canyon

August 10, 2008

My father would have been 97 years old today. In his honor, I think I'll put on a red dress, buttonhole a total stranger, and tell that person the story of my life. We miss you, Floydie!

With the recent storms, the water level is four times what it was last Sunday, when we splashed in neck-deep pools. But the monsoon is back, so any activity needs to be over and done before it comes roaring down the canyon. It was Dennis' idea to get up very early, bike up the canyon to our favorite swimming hole, and be back at the parking lot before the ban on bikes at 9:00 am.

We thought it was be a difficult climb, but it was dead easy, and the ride down was a blast, especially flying through the water that spilled over the bridges.

It took just over an hour to bike three miles up the canyon, hit the bubbles, and coast back to the TacoMa. I think we have a new monsoon tradition!

On the way down, we spotted this great-looking beetle, which we have since identified as a Giant Mesquite Bug
